Deniz Poyraz was a journalist and a member of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey. She was born in the southeastern province of Kars in 1991 and grew up in Istanbul. She studied journalism at İstanbul Bilgi University and began her career as a reporter in 2016.
Poyraz worked for ETHA news agency, one of the few independent media outlets in Turkey that still operate. She covered a wide range of issues, including labor rights, environmental issues, and the Kurdish issue.
In 2020, she was detained several times for her reporting on Kurdish issues and was also accused of supporting terrorism. She was briefly arrested under the accusation of being a “member of a terrorist organization” and was released on probation.
On March 23, 2021, Deniz Poyraz was assassinated in Izmir, Turkey by an unknown assailant. The HDP, which she was a member of, issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for an investigation into her murder. The government of Turkey has been criticized for its human rights record, including its treatment of journalists and political prisoners.
